The Importance of Celebrating Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is one of the most popular annual celebrations in the United States, but also around the world. It’s tied inextricably to the Carnival season, and to the Catholic religion, specifically to Lent. However, it has transcended the boundaries of just one religion, and is celebrated by believers and nonbelievers alike today.

The Origins of Mardi Gras

The term “Mardi Gras” is French, and it literally means Fat Tuesday, which is the day before the beginning of Lent. Originally, the celebration was only on this day, and it consisted of eating richer, fattier foods in preparation for a time of fasting. In other nations, the celebration took on different connotations. For instance, in many English-speaking nations, Fat Tuesday is known as Shrove Tuesday, with the focus being on the confession of sins.

The first celebration of Mardi Gras in the US took place in 1699 when two French explorers landed south of what would eventually become New Orleans. They held a small celebration and named the spot Ponte du Mardi Gras. From that point, the celebration took root and began to evolve.

In the 1800s, Mardi Gras began to take on an appearance closer to what we know today. New Orleans street krewes appeared, and the first throw was used – these were sugar-coated almonds and coins. Eventually, glass beads made their appearance. These then evolved into the plastic beads we know today.

The Need for Authentic Mardi Gras Merchandise

Whether you’ll be taking part in a parade within the city of New Orleans, or holding a private event somewhere else, the right Mardi Gras merchandise is vital. You’ll find a host of important merchandise types. Obviously, plastic beads are vital. You should stock up on a range of colors and bead sizes ahead of time. However, there are other options, too, including hand-strung beads, masks, hats, bracelets, feather boas, toy swords, crackers, pins, glow sticks and a great deal more.

Finding the right mix of merchandise types, prices and availability can be challenging, particularly if you are working with a brick and mortar retailer. The better option is to buy from an online Mardi Gras merchandise seller to ensure that you’re able to find the lowest prices possible, combined with fast shipping and good availability. With a trusted partner, you can buy the Mardi Gras merchandise you need and not have to worry about out of stock items, high prices, or slow shipping.
